Heathen Harvest
Tobias Fischer, as label founder, webzine editor, and musician, is a gentleman with impeccable experimental/ ambient credentials, and so it is with pleasure that I looked to reviewing this double CD-R album, released under the moniker Feu Follet. For the most part the music is very conventional – long, slow-moving drones, pads, and synth-strings, with tranquil percussion at times. Misty samples that evoke filtered natural noises and eerie, mythic creatures, are scattered throughout the very lengthy tracks. Timbres bleed together in a rich and smooth way, and at times the album has a strong New Age feel, darkness but also warmth. To be honest, that is about all that one can say about the music, with the exception of track two on disc one, “Elemental”: an uncredited Japanese-speaking gentleman orates across some of the most exquisitely composed ambient/trip-hop I have heard, airy melodies and artful percussive elements melding into a marvellous groove. It is a bit of a shame that this influence doesn’t recur throughout the album, actually. That said, although this release basically does not tread any new ground or do anything particular inventive – well, I find myself listening to it almost obsessively, even though finding enough time to sit through the whole 108 minutes is something of a challenge. I would like to try to explain just why I like this, in some ways quite generic, release so much. Really it comes down, perhaps, to the creative intent of the artist coming through the music. Conventional ambient though it might be, every tone and drone somehow has the character of a human voice raised in gentle song, soothing choruses that weave together to form an all-encompassing dream state. The music washes in tranquil waves over one’s ears, dissolving the small everyday mental turmoil to which we are so often accustomed. I do not quite understand how Fischer has achieved this, but he has, and masterfully so. At some points the release tarries in darker or murkier places, but on the whole it returns to its spacious horizons and wide panoramas. It invokes a strong synaesthesia to me: for me it is played in the keys of blue, purple, green, and black, ribbons of colour trailing and blurring through a night sky. This release is limited to 150 copies (presented in a very cool DVD case format), so if all this sounds appealing then you might need to act swiftly in order to get yourself a copy. There is not much more I can say about this release, except to strongly recommend it to anyone who likes ambient music from the more soothing end of the spectrum. I hope Fischer explores his trip hop ideas more in future releases, too.

Vital Weekly 679
Behind Feu Follet is Tobias Fischer, perhaps you recall this from previous reviews, but he is also a writer for the excellent Tokafi site, which is not unlike Vital Weekly, but then also with interviews. Go check that out. Its nice to see that as Feu Follet he releases this double CDR, which seems to me very uncommon in the world of CDR where more is certainly more and others would have opted for 2 releases. Feu Follet is an ambient/drone based project, that much we learned in the past, but we are pressed against that fact here, in this 108 minute lasting trip. A long ride. Long pieces of what seems to be synthesizers (analogue? digital?) waving nice tapestries of sound, sometimes underlined with a simple mechanical rhythm, as such in the 'Promesses Vaines' piece or even ambient house alike in 'Elemental'. This is great music, be it that nothing much new happens under the big Ambient umbrella. This is music to undergo rather than to get through by listening thoroughly concentrated. Great late night music to dream by, to read by or perhaps even to sleep by.

Club-Debil

review by Stephen Fruitman
As a project, this may be Feu Follet´s "chant du cygne" - its swan song. Or it may not. Intended by Tobias Fischer as an exploration of sound as a language that is "soft, fluent and elegant", he announced on his website that he was done with the monicker, then had second thoughts. (Among whatever other ideas he is pondering, only the first volume in a projected trilogy entitled "The Icicle Lectures" has seen the light of day.) Whether this is adieu or not, Fischer is certainly not retiring as an artist, and as far as Feu Follet is concerned, we now have a hefty DVD box beautifully designed by Mirko Uhlig and housing two compact discs to enjoy. Both discs begin and end with twenty-minute epics, sandwiching shorter pieces between them. It is, apparently, a cloudy night, and the first track on the first disc informs us that we are approaching the horizon. We hear a drip-drip-drip against a twittering, glittery backdrop – is the night melting? ”Elemental” jars you out of your pleasant revery as a gravelly voice abruptly begins expounding on some matter in an unidentifiable tongue. His speech done, a groovy little techno beat ensues, soon joined by a sparse but pretty melody that grows with each instrument added into a modestly cosmic rock club jam. A brief chill down moment puts us in the right frame of mind for the twenty-one minute finale of ”Lucia s´envole”, which soars on gusts of ambient breath. Ahh. Disc Two opens grandly with ”Nuit”, a space opera - infinite space and friendly gases upon which to float. We seem to have made solid ground by the second track, with fine gravel crunching underfoot, but resume our spacewalking on ”Promesses vaines”, to the occasional beat of an oddly-ringing hammer. Outdoor repairs being made to the space station? There are absolutely no disappointments in the Feu Follet catalogue and should this indeed be its last entry, then it is a substantial and fitting one.
